Biographical / Historical

The role of Vice-Chancellor was created with the incorporation of the Royal Charter in 1905 (the role of Principal was previously at the earlier Firth College and University College). The current title of the role is President & Vice-Chancellor. The President & Vice-Chancellor is the Chief Executive and Accountable Officer. They are chair of Senate and a member of the University Council. The main responsibilities of the Vice-Chancellor include providing strategic leadership for the Universty; having accountability to Senate and Council for academic and financial performance as well as compliance with all regulatory bodies; leading and managing the University Executive Board and being a key point of contact for major stakeholders. Records within this series reflect this strategic position and the wide range of subjects and areas of interest that the role of Vice-Chancellor encompasses.
