Biography

Professor William Ripper was Vice Chancellor of the University of Sheffield from 1917 to 1919. A Mechanical Engineer, he taught Mechanical Engineering at the Sheffield Technical School where he became Professor in 1889. The Technical School became the Department of Applied Science in the new University in 1905, with Ripper as head of the Department. Ripper took the position of acting Vice Chancellor from 1917 to 1919 whilst Herbert Fisher was called away to a government post in the First World War. He remained professor, Dean of Engineering, Vice Chairman of the Committee on Munitions of War and Director of Faculty munitions work. He was awarded the Companion of Honour for his war work. His retirement came in 1923 at the age of 70. Ripper died in Lewes, Sussex, in August 1937. Source 'Steel City Scholars' Helen Mathers; Oxford Dictionary of National Biography.
