Biography

Sir Charles Norton Edgcumbe Eliot was Vice Chancellor of the University of Sheffield from 1905 to 1912. He succeeded William Hicks as Vice-Chancellor in July 1905. He arrived with a background in the diplomatic service rather than education and was a brilliant polymath. His interests included Zoology, Far Eastern languages and Philosophy. He took the role of Vice-Chancellor of Hong Kong University after he left Sheffield in 1912, and returned to the diplomatic service thereafter.
