Biography

The Right Honourable Herbert Albert Laurens Fisher was Vice-Chancellor of the University of Sheffield from 1913 to 1917. A fellow of New College, Oxford, he was a popular and authoritative exponent of European history. His time at Sheffield was dominated by the First World War and the impact it had upon the University. He set up a University scientific advisory committee to encourage the application of research to the needs of industry and in 1916 was summoned by Lloyd George's new government to become President of the Board of Education. He became Liberal MP for Sheffield Hallam and in 1918 was elected for the combined universities seat in the Commons. Following his departure from Sheffield, he eventually returned to Oxford University and died in April 1940. Sources: 'Steel City Scholars', Helen Mathers; Oxford Dictionary of National Biography.
