Biography

Sir William Henry Hadow was Vice Chancellor of the University of Sheffield from 1919 to 1930. He was born in Ebrington, Gloucestershire, in 1859, the eldest son of the vicar. He studied at Malvern College, and then at Worcester College, Oxford, where he gained a first class in classical moderations (1880) and a BMus in 1890. He lecturedd in both classics and music, became a proctor for the University in 1897. In 1909 he became principal of Armstrong College, Newcastle upon Tyne (part of Durham University), and between 1916 and 1918 was Vice Chancellor of Durham University. In 1918, he was knighted for his wartime services to education, and in 1920 was appointed CBE. Whilst at Sheffield Hadow continued to lecture and composed chamber music, songs and hymns as well as establishing a chair of music in 1927. He also played a leading role in national education, as chairman of the consultative committee of the Board of Education, which in 1926 produced a report entitled The Education of the Adolescent, known as the "Hadow Report".

Hadow died in London in April 1937.
