Biography

Sir Hugh Norwood Robson was Vice Chancellor of the University from 1966 to 1974. Robson was born in Langholm, Scotland in 1917. He studied medicine at the University of Edinburgh, achieving a Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery in 1941. During the Second World War he served in the Royal Navy Volunteer Reserve becoming a lieutenant surgeon in Singapore. went on to become a lecturer at Edinburgh University in 1947, Senior Lecturer at the University of Aberdeen in 1950, and Professor of Medicine at the University of Adelaide in 1953, only the second person in Australia to receive a full-time professorship in medicine. He was Dean of the Faculty of Medicine between 1959 and 1961 and chairman of the Professional Board between 1961 and 1963. After leaving Sheffield he became Principal of the University of Edinburgh from 1974 until 1979. He received honorary doctorates from the University of Sheffield and the University of Pennsylvania and was knighted in 1974.
