Biography

Charles Poole was a Panorama proprietor, son of Richard Poole (c1785-1860), and brother of George Walter Poole (1828-1877) and John Poole (1817-1889).

Charles started his life in showmanship as a musician and could often be found busking on the streets of England with his brother George. The pair were spotted by Panorama proprietor Moses Gompertz who employed them to play music to accompany the scenes of his travelling show. Charles and George worked their way up to become Gompertz’s business partners and ended up running Gompertz’s Panoramas during the 1850s and 1860s. They eventually founded their own company with Anthony Young, called Poole & Young.

Charles died in Brighton on 14 September 1877 three months before his brother and lifelong business partner George. After his death his widow Charlotte, took over his part of the Panorama business.
