Scope and Contents
Fifteen volumes of newspaper cuttings collected by Leslie F. Newman relating to folklore and magic, particularly but not exclusively in East Anglia, dating mostly from the early 1920s to 1970. The cuttings are taken from a range of magazines and newspapers, and include articles on witchcraft, folklore, country customs, ghosts, etc.

Biographical / Historical
Leslie Newman came from farming stock, and became an agricultural chemist and a Fellow of St. Catherine’s, Cambridge. He had a considerable knowledge of the East Anglian countryside, and a keen interest in folklore and related topics.
Leslie Newman died in the early 1970s.

Leslie Newman passed the volumes on to Dr. Alan Gauld, of the School of Psychology at the University of Nottingham, who later donated them to the University of Sheffield in 2001.
