Wheat Collection
Scope and Contents
A collection of 245 volumes on law from the Wheat family of Sheffield solicitors. The majority were printed in the 18th century, although 35 date from the 17th century, and 21 from the early 19th century.
The Wheats were a family of Sheffield solicitors, active from around 1766 until the 1930s. The first James Wheat was a solicitor whose business was based in Paradise Square in Sheffield. He built a library of books on the law dating back to the sixteenth century. Many of the volumes were interleaved with blank pages for note-making, and this collection is very much an insight into a professional man's working library.
This collection is in the process of being fully catalogued. The listing is not yet available online.
