Desch Manuscripts
Scope and Contents
The collection consists of diaries; slides; reprints; school and university notebooks and working notes; committee papers; photographs; and some 1600 items of correspondence. The material deals with Desch´s interest and work in historical metallurgy and Positivism, as well as with aspects of his research and professional career and his chemical work in the First World War.

Biographical / Historical
Cecil Henry Desch was born in 1874, and was Professor of Metallurgy at the University of Sheffield from 1920 until 1931. He was also Superintendent of the Department of Metallurgy at the National Physical Laboratory from 1932 until his retirement in 1939. He is remembered particularly for his efforts in furthering nationally the prestige of his subject. He died in 1958.
