A number of women (including Sarah Harriet Sanger, furthest left, Yetta Schultz third and Kate Holloway fourth from left) are pointing in the background. Ellen Sanger is also furthest right in the background....

Photograph of a circus living wagon Ellen 'Topsy' Austin and her husband Harry Austin. The photograph has 'Harry and Topsy' written at the bottom. Harry Austin, was one of the Austin Brothers equestrian performers. Ellen 'Topsy' Austin (nee Coleman) was daughter of Laurina Sanger and Alexander Coleman and granddaughter of 'Lord' George Sanger.

Photograph of Ellen Sanger (nee Chapman) lion tamer and wife of George Sanger. Ellen performed under the name of Madame Pauline De Vere the Lion Queen. She performed at Wombwell's Menagerie before joining Sanger's Circus. Ellen also often appeared as Britannia with lions at her feet on top of a Sanger's Circus tableau wagon as part of the circus procession. Ellen died on 30th April 1899 aged 67. 'Mrs G Sanger 1893' is written on the reverse of the photograph.

Photograph of a lion cage circus wagon with a top hatted lion tamer Captain Frank Taylor seated inside. Frank Taylor, also known as Lieut. Taylor and Alpine Charlie, was an animal trainer noted for his time at Lord George Sanger's Circus. He was notably involved in the 'escaped' wolves incident with Lord George Sanger's Circus in London which was described in detail in the book 'Seventy Years a Showman'.

Photograph of a Sanger family group and friends at Grand Hall by the Sea in Margate. George Holloway and James Holloway are fourth and fifth from left. Yetta Schultz is fifth, George Austin is fourth and Kate Holloway second from right. The Margate site was purchased by the Sanger family in 1871 with Thomas Dalby Reeve who became Mayor of Margate. The site became an attraction with a zoo and eventually became Dreamlands Amusement Park under different ownership.

Scope and Contents Photograph of two equestrian performers believed to be (top to bottom) George and Harry Austin from 'Lord' George Sanger's Circus. Harry and George Austin stayed with 'Lord' George Sanger's Circus for over thirty years as a double jockey act. Harry married Ellen Coleman granddaughter of 'Lord' George Sanger and George married Kate Holloway niece of 'Lord' George Sanger. At one stage they went to perform in America with Ringling, Barnum and Bailey and for a short time formed Austin's Circus....
