Scope and Contents
Black and white photographs and postcards of steam traction engines, collected by Peter Black. Including the first traction engine he worked with called ‘Clara’, a Burrell No. 1 steam traction engine belonging to Pat Collins Presenting Fun Fair, H. Chipperfield's Burrell engine called ‘Earl Beauty’, C. Presland's Burrell engine called 'Princess Mary', an engine belonging to Hibberts Amusement Contractors of Stockport, J. Cole's Burrell engine called ‘Western Pioneer', engines belonging to Silcock's Amusements of Warrington, an engine belonging to T. Alberts & Sons of Bolton, R. Green's Burrell engine called ‘Giant Caterpillar on Tour’, an engine belonging to Farrar of Doncaster and The Gladiator Showman Road Locomotive built in 1909.
Interspersed with black and white photographs of family members, friends and traction engine worker colleagues of Peter Black, as well as general views of fairgrounds, fairground rides and amusements, and steam fairs he attended as a member of the British Fairground Society. There are notably photographs of his good friend and colleague, Joseph Horner (aka Old Joe Horner), the Steam Fans Rally at Birmingham Onion Fair in 1951 and a reunion of Traction Engine Drivers at Nottingham Goose Fair in 1951.
