Biographical / Historical
Peter Black was born in Stretford, Lancashire in 1923. He was a fairground worker (not a showman). He worked on fairgrounds, mainly driving traction engines, from a young age until his marriage in 1957. During this time, he worked for A. Hibbert in the Lancashire Section, Tom Alberts, the Morley Family and the Silcocks. He worked on all the fairground sites around Manchester and also often travelled to Nottingham for the Goose Fair. Peter remained in touch with the friends he made whilst working on the fairground, notably showman, Joseph Horner, aka 'Old Joe Horner' (1890-1959).
