Marshall and Scott Family Photographs, c1880 - 1970
Scope and Contents
Large collection of black and white photographs and postcards, and colour photographs, some annotated on the reverse, of the Marshall, Scott, Kayes, Baker and Testo families, as well as various other circus personalities and performers between 1880s and 1970s. Including studio portrait photographs, photographs taken for publicity purposes and candid photographs, of individual performers and groups of performers in costume onstage and backstage, with the animals they trained, at the family caravan site, on holiday, and at weddings and other family occasions. Accompanied by photographs showing general views of circus tents, fairgrounds and crowds, as well as photographs of steam engines, fairground amusements, rides and catering stalls, some of which were owned by W. H. Marshall and Sons Amusements (later known as Marshall's Modern Amusements Ltd). The photographs provide an insight into the life and experiences of a large and extended family, who travelled as circus performers, and worked at fairgrounds in Britain, Ireland and the United States of America.
