Biography

Herbert 'Bert' Sanger was the eldest son of John Sanger and his wife Rebecca Pinder. One of eleven children, Bert became famous as Pimpo the clown. Although there were successive clowns using that name, Bert was the first clown known as Pimpo. Bert married Lillian Ohmy in 1916. He joined the RAF in the First World War and was wounded on active service. In December 1918 he was in a military hospital in Etaples in France. Bert died in 1928.
