Stars in der Manege (1959 - 2008)
Biography
Stars in the Manege was an annual charity event organised by The Evening Newspaper and the Bavarian Radio Broadcaster, which run between 1959 and 2008. The event was originally set up to help with the repatriation of the Munich evacuees during the Second World War.
Although initially it was broadcast in the middle of the year, eventually it was moved to the Christmas season as it was reaching a wider audience. From 1962 the event was run from the Circus Krone building in Munich.
The gala was recorded and broadcast by Bayerischer Rundfunk in collaboration with ORF and Swiss television as part of Eurovision and broadcast on Boxing Day.
As well as the circus artistes, celebrities of the day took part on the event and donated their fees to the charity. Once the original aims of the charity were achieved the proceeds of the event were donated to the Werner Friedmann Foundation for old artists and journalists and other charities.
2008 was the last year the event was recorded due to dwindling audience numbers. In 2009 only a summary of past events was broadcasted and by 2010 it had been discontinued all together.
