Biography

The Rosaires are a ninth generation circus family. Rosaire’s Circus was first established by Fred Ross (1877-1949), a circus clown and contortionist, and his wife Florence Arnold in 1904.

Fred came from a circus family from his mother’s side and his father had connections with the fairground. Fred performed as Count Rosaire and when he married Florence she became Countess Rosaire. They had eight children Aubrey (b.1904), Dennis, Zena (b.1909), Ivor (1911-2005), Cicily (b.1912), E. Vivian (b.1914), Derrick (b.1916) and Ida (b.1919), all of whom followed their parents footsteps into circus and became successful performers. The Rosaires became renowned especially for their skilful animal training and performance. Ivor became known for his elephants, Derrick for his equestrian skills and Ida for her dog acts.

Over generations, the Rosaire family grew and extended to other countries including Spain, Ireland and the USA and the Ross Bros Crown Circus still travels the UK.
