Scope and Contents
Records of the Registrar's Office consist of letter books, correspondence files, newscuttings scrap books, business books, matriculation registers, and various events records. Correspondence and newscuttings books from the former Firth College, and University College, Sheffield, are included in this collection: Firth College correspondence (FC/REG/1), University College, Sheffield correspondence (UCS/REG/1-2), Outgoing correspondence letter books (US/REG/1-2), Correspondence files A-Z (US/REG/3), Business books (US/REG/4), Newscuttings volumes (UCS/REG/5), Newscuttings volumes (US/REG/5), Matriculation registers (US/REG/6), Records relating to official ceremonies, visits and openings (US/REG/7), Records relating to Official Openings and Visits (US/REG/8), Records relating to testimonials and addresses to other establishments (US/REG/9), Committee books (US/REG/10), Records relating to social events, testimonials and presentations (US/REG/11), War records (US/REG/12), Funeral services and memorial records (US/REG/13).

Biographical / Historical
The Registrar was the Chief Administrative Officer of the University and first appointed in 1879 for the former Firth College. From 1965 the name changed to Registrar and Secretary until the position became defunct in 2014. The Registrar and Secretary's Office dealt with all matters of administration, committees, academic matters, publications, buildings and finance. The former registrars are: Ensor Drury 1879 - 1902, William Michael Gibbons 1902 - 1944, Arthur William Chapman 1944 - 1963, George Clark 1963 - 1965. The former Registrar and Secretaries are Alexander Monteith Currie 1965 - 1978, Francis John Orton 1978 - 1982, Dr John Sydney Padley 1982 - 1988, Dr David Edward Fletcher 1998 - 2008, and Dr Philip Harvey 2009 - 2014.
