Devey was commissioned by Lieutenant Colonel Philip Smith to design the manor in the early 1870's, and his brother Revd Albert Smith commissioned a new vicarage nearby. Devey was commissioned for work at Sudbury Hall and the surrounding estate during the 1870s by the 6th Lord Vernon, and through this received the commission for the new stables, kennels and huntsmens' cottages.
