Sheffield University Film Collection
Scope and Contents
A collection of films relating to the history and life of the University of Sheffield from its Inauguration in 1905 to the present day.In 1996 the University explored the possibility of producing a video film to mark the Centenary of the Inauguration of University College (the immediate forerunner of the University) in Sheffield in 1897, and a large cache of film footage was located in the Students' Union (see Sheffield University Students' Union Film Archive). Some of this was reformatted as VHS video film. Copies of this material, together with other reformatted footage obtained by the University's Television service from elsewhere, forms the basis of the collection.

Biographical / Historical
The original collection of films begins with the visit of King Edward VII and Queen Alexandra to Sheffield in 1905, when the King officially inaugurated the new University, and continues to a film entitled "The Undergraduate" made circa 1965 which depicted contemporary student life at a redbrick university. The creators of the material have been from both within and without the University. Some has originated from activities of the Students' Union, and includes film by the SUSU Film Society / Film Unit.
Other material will be added as it becomes available: the latest film received is "Astronautical Fuel Technology", made by the Department of Fuel Technology and Chemical Engineering circa 1968.
