Scope and Contents
A collection of papers relating to work on materials science carried out by John Douglas Eshelby. The collection consists of correspondence, notebooks, research papers and miscellaneous documents relating to the working life of John Douglas Eshelby, notably relating to the subject area of materials science, but also including mathematics, theoretical physics, languages and archaeology.

Biographical / Historical
John Douglas (Jock) Eshelby, born in 1916, was privately educated and took his degree at Bristol University. After holding several early research posts, he worked in the Cavendish Laboratory in Cambridge; was elected a Fellow of Churchill College; was then appointed Reader in the Faculty of Materials (Theory of Materials) at Sheffield; and became Professor in 1971. He died in 1981.

The Eshelby Manuscripts were bequeathed to the University Library by Professor Eshelby, and received in 1991, along with Professor Eshelby’s personal library (The Eshelby Collection). The papers have been listed by Professor Bruce Bilby, Professor Eshelby's colleague.
