Scope and Contents
Correspondence with Labour MPs mainly concerning education policy and Blunkett's role as Shadow Education Secretary. Includes correspondence and papers relating to: leaks to the press of details of confidential PLP meetings; Labour policy towards VAT on school fees; an article in the Independent regarding Labour's early years policy and in particular the role of private nurseries; possible policy of a graduate tax; national campaign on the government's cuts to education budgets; Clause IV campaign to modernise Clause Four of the Labour Party constitution; and the University for Industry Project. Also includes: policy notes entitled 'Labour's Education Policy - some early thoughts' prepared by Margaret Hodge for Blunkett; letters to Gordon Brown and Tony Blair attaching a paper entitled 'The Economic Case for Investment in Education'; and letter to Tony Blair regarding division of responsibilities between Blunkett and Michael Meacher, Shadow Secretary for Employment, following the creation of the Department of Education and Employment. Also includes correspondence with Liz Allen, Labour's Education Policy Officer.
