Scope and Contents

Recording of Lydia Henry's experiences and thoughts including: Side 1: Medical women in history and their contribution to the Great War effort, Suffragettes and the en masse volunteering of women in industrial and agricultural work. The setting up of the Scottish Women's Hospital in 1914 within the ruins of an abbey, which was offered to the War Office but refused. Recalls anecdotes of her time there, including the particulars of encountering and then treating soldiers from different nations. Moves on to the French Croix Rouge and set up at Royaumont, 1917-19, when Lydia Henry joined the staff, reminiscences and early history of the abbey where the hospital resided, the additional military hospital at Villers-Cotterets and eventual evacuation [some repetition of material in 110/3/1 here]. Elaborates on combination of both hospitals at Royaumont and reports of overcrowding.

Side 2: Returns to 1916 - 1918 experiences at Sheffield University Medical School, internship at the Royal Infirmary and the controversy it incited, death of her aunt and return to Macduff. Meeting with Stewart Henry and eventual marriage. Details her husband's war wounds sustained in 1917 at Vimy Ridge, his relocation to Netley Hospital. Recounts seeing a Zeppelin raid on Sheffield in which the steelworks were bombed. 1918 leave from Royaumont spent in Macduff, return and influx of casualties from German offensive. 1921-23 Assistant Medical Officer of Health post at a 'VD' clinic in Blackburn, Lancashire, establishment of different clinics for obstetrics and gynaecological health, educational programmes and public lecturing. Description of social evils like untrained midwives, abortions, and the case of a girl who suffered a sexual assault and resultant pregnancy. Dr Henry remained in Blackburn for 3 years, striking up a friendship with Sir Lewis and Lady Beard and others.
