Scope and Contents
Side 1: Recording of Lydia Henry's experiences including: 1909-16, Sheffield University Medical School as the first female medical student who graduated (MBChB, on June 30, her birthday), the effect of war on local hospitals, internship in 1916 at the Royal Infirmary. Memories of the Lodge and Adolphus Stagg the porter, the system of bell tolling used by the Royal Infirmary, memorable case histories and emergency events, injuries from the munitions works and Zeppelin raid. Recalls the dearth of specialty treatment for sexually transmitted disease in women and men and the opening of two corresponding 'VD clinics' in Sheffield, the first of their kind in Britain, of which Henry was an assistant in the Women's Clinic during her internship. Made an appeal in 1917 to Scottish Women's Hospital at Royaumont appeal but was turned down. Went to Edinburgh, [blank section], reads excerpts submitted to Royaumont Newsletter of 1966. These excerpts detail family life in Canada in the 1960s and time spent holidaying, a Royaumont reunion in Brittany, and contains speculative anecdotes on artefacts, children and the natural world from her time spent in France and Canada.
Side 2: 1917-19 Royaumont, and additional hospital at Villers-Cotterets. Recalls conditions of working at Villers-Cotterets' field hospital, including witnessing aerial warfare, working in blackouts, and evacuation from France. Ceremony and awarding of military decorations to staff, both medical and infantry, the creation of the Royaumont Newsletter in the 1920s, and annual reunions, and further memories of Royaumont. Recalls the pioneering of treatment for gas gangrene conducted at Royaumont and the relocation of those from the Scottish Women's Hospital Unit. 1939 attempt to found a new 'Royaumont', 1956 American connection with Royaumont and 'This Is Your Life' programme.
