Two Heads are Better than One, May 1806
Scope and Contents
Artist: Charles Williams. Published: William Holland. Ellenborough (Edward Law), in wig and gown, with two heads, sits squarely on an (invisible) seat on a dais of two steps, a hand on each knee. He looks from the corners of his eyes to left and to right On the right is George III, leaning on the back of a settee whose seat is filled with roses, and inspecting the judge through his glass. He says: "Very good - a Man with two heads!! a very old saying, Two head are better than One! - I like a Man with two heads!" The head on the right has a good-humoured expression, and the words 'Cabinet, Cabinet, Cabinet', float from it towards the King. On the left, Justice, in classical draperies, stands blindfold, holding her sword, and a pair of evenly balanced scales. She says: "With me you have gained, and shall gain immortal Honor". Ellenborough looks sourly towards her, the words 'Law! Law! Law!' issuing from his drawn-down mouth. Description from the British Museum.
