The Enraged Politicians or Political Ballad Singers, 1 May 1805
Scope and Contents
Artist: Charles Williams. Published: S. W. Fores. Ballad singers bawl their songs, thus advertising their wares; they fill the space, a cobbled street, between two houses, whose open ground-floor windows are on the extreme left and right of the design. On the left. Melville, in Highland dress, looks out, holding his head and clenches his fist. Pitt, in the opposite window, clenches both fists and stamps in tury. The ragged singers are two men and three women. Their songs (left to right) are: 'Peculation - Peculation O it was a wonderfull Peculation!' A woman bawls, lacing Pitt; 'He went to Daddy Jenky - by Trimmer Hall attended, \ In such Company good, how his Morals must be mended \ Bow, wow, wow.' [From Captain Morris's song on the incident (1785) of Pitt's being mistaken for a robber on his righteturn from dining with Jenkinson, 'Hall' (Hal) replacing Wilberforce as his companion] A woman wearing a tartan cap sings: "T'was within a mile of Edinburgho Town". A burly ruffian sings: "For if rich rogues like us were to swing \ T'would soon thin the land such a Number to string \ Upon Tyburn Tree!" A fat trollope shouts, "Sing Tantarara Rogues all." Behind the ballad-singers appear the heads of amused passers-by. Description from the British Museum.
