Billy in the Salt Box, May 1805
Scope and Contents
Artist: Charles Williams. Published: William Holland. A monstrously fat cook stands looking sideways in consternation at her salt-box which hangs against the wall in the accustomed place next the fire. A tiny Pitt looks out like a Jack-in-the-box, supporting the lid on his shoulders; he says, smiling: "How do you do, Cookey?" She says: "Curse the fellow how he has frightened me - I think in my heart he is getting in every where! - Who the deuce would have thought of finding him in the Salt box!!!" A little dog barks at Pitt: "Bow-Wow-Wow". The cook's broad person obscures a great part of the wide kitchen range on which pots are boiling. A huge joint of beef is on the spit; she has dropped her basting ladle on the flags at her feet. On the chimney-piece is a row of utensils: snuffers, candle-sticks, pepper-pot, &c.
