Bleeding Neptune or A Scotch Experiment!!, April 1805
Scope and Contents
Artist: Isaac Cruikshank. Published: S. W. Fores. Neptune sits enthroned (left), holding his trident, while Melville bleeds him, guineas spouting from the incision in his left arm into a bowl held by Trotter. He says: "Pray Gentlemen be merciful- consider I have some feeling." Melville stands holding his patient's left hand, his knife in the right; he turns his head in profile to the right. to look down at the kneeling Trotter, saying, "Thats right Mon! Ye as my confidential Agent Catch aw the bluid. then they will na suspect me of the Operation." He wears a plaid and Scots cap in which is a thistle held by a brooch on which is a St. Andrew's cross. Trotter is handsome and well dressed; his bowl is piled high with coins, some of which fall to the ground. Description from the British Museum.
