A Naval Enquiry with a Naught-ical Explanation, 25 March 1805
Scope and Contents
Artist: Charles Williams. Published: S. W. Fores. The five Commissioners of Naval Enquiry sit at a table, examining Trotter and Lord Melville (Dundas) who stand in back view and on the chairman's right. The latter and another Commissioner (right) face each other at opposite ends of the table, the other three face Trotter and Melville; all watch Trotter. The chairman (left) asks: "But how did you come by the Money". The two examinees are in Highland dress, holding their feathered bonnets. Trotter points with his right. thumb to Melville, saying, "Why, do ye See, it was a bit of a kind of a sort of a manner of a Way of a thing that I - no - no, that he, No that We were about to convey to transfer, to advise, to deliberate, to manage in that sort of way that would appear as clear as Mud, but I am afraid that I have gone to far already in exposing the Secrets of Office, but Joseph can tell you more about it." Melville turns his head in profile toTrotter, saying with extended forefinger: "Aye! Aye! thats exactly the very thing I was about to inform you aw my Sel." Description from the British Museum.
