The Cabinet Dinner or a Political Meeting, 12 June 1804

Scope and Contents

Artist: Charles Williams. Published: S. W. Fores. Eight members of the Opposition sleep round an oval dinner-table, on which guttering candles have burnt low. In the chair, full face, and in the centre, the Prince of Wales, very stout, leans back. Opposite him Fox sprawls with one foot on the table, the other on the chair of Sheridan who sits on his right. On Fox's left is Grey, his head and arms on the table, identified by a song that he holds: [The old woman] 'Cloathed in Grey'. On the Prince's right sits Norfolk, on his left Windham. On the left and on Norfolk's right, is the spectacled Buckingham. At the extreme ends of the table are (?) Grenville (left) and Spencer (right). Under the latter's chair is a large book: [?] 'Drewe upon Fortification' [he had been First Lord]. Under Sheridan's chair lies Carlo, the dog who had been his saviour. On the table are two candelabra, dessert (pineapples etc), decanters, and glasses. Empty bottles lie on the floor. On the wall is an elaborate bracket-clock, the hands indicating three o'clock; it is supported by a figure of Time, into whose gaping mouth an infant Bacchus squeezes juice from a bunch of grapes. Above it is inscribed 'And Darkness Covered The Face Of The Deep' [cf. Genesis, i. 2]. After the title: 'An Illustrious way of Enjoying a Friend'. Description from the British Museum.
