The Bath Revolution or the King Deposed, 23 December 1803

Scope and Contents

Artist: Charles Williams. Published: S. W. Fores. A young man (King) is being chased through the door of a house on to the Parade. He wears court-dress and holds a tricorne hat; suspended from his neck is an oval medallion on which is a nude whole length figure (Venus?); he says: "Oh dear oh dear I shall lose the Golden Apple!!" His apple is on the pavement at his feet. A stern, plainly-dressed man (Heaven) (left) has pushed him out; he says: "Begone thou narrow minded Soul, nor dare to look again upon the face of Heaven". Two bystanders (right), a military and a naval officer, discuss the ejection. The sailor (right), short and fat, looks up to the soldier, saying, "See how they are useing our Friend, I'll support him that I will provided they dont come to blows, but I shant Stand up to be beat." The 'd' in 'Stand up' is faint, to show that the speaker is Stanhope. The soldier, who holds a dice-box and a serpentine cudgel, answers, "Aye Aye we'll play his cards for him, I'll lay 5 to 4. we nick them in a Jeffy." Iron railings, through which tree-tops are seen, and the corner of a pillared portico (right) complete the background. Description from the British Museum.
