The Crown and Anchor Desper[d]ado; or, The Cracked Member Belonging to the Bedlam Rangers, 8 August 1803
Scope and Contents
Artist: Charles Williams. Published: S. W. Fores. Burdett (right) leans from a ground-floor window of the 'Crow[n & A]nchor' tavern, whose façade stretches diagonally across the design, the door on the extreme left. He harangues an audience who stand outside the railings, his right. arm extended. He says: "I say don't Arm - don't enter into the Volunteer Corps, dont support the Minister, dont oppose the French - but you Sailors all demand to be Captains, You Soldiers to be Colonels, you people to be Baronets in short now is your time to insist upon every thing your hearts can wish, and then - " The audience, who stand directed to the right. as if suddenly checked in walking along the street, are contemptuous; only two face the window: one, clutching the railings, says: "Why then the Rascally French will be here, and we shall have nothing left to Ask for." A more roughly dressed man beside him on the extreme right. looks up, saying, "There's a pretty Fellow for a Member." Two soldiers wearing high-plumed shakos, say: "I suppose he wants to go partners with Boney", and, "so he should, if I had my will & he should have more kicks than halfpence." Two sailors, with folded arms, wearing bows inscribed 'God save the King' in their tarpaulin hats, say: "Sink him" and "No wonder, when he was Despards Friend." The others are a man wearing the plumed helmet of a light horse volunteer and two civilians with top-hats, one saying: "Down with him". Description from the British Museum.
