Scope and Contents

By Charles Williams. Napoleon sits arrogantly on a chair of state or throne on a dais covered by a fringed carpet. Fox, Erskine, and Harvey Combe bow abjectly, their heads on a level with their knees, their swords rising ludicrously above their backs. Combe wears his mayoral chain; from his pocket projects 'Essay on Porter Brewing by H. C. O'Conn[or's] Brief' projects from Erskine's pocket; Fox's breeches have burst their fastenings. The two last sweep the ground with bonnets rouges; all three wear bag-wigs. They say in unison: "We are with the highest consideration Your Super Royal Consulships most Devoted, most Obsequious, and most Honor 'd Servants". Napoleon is dressed rather as a Director than as First Consul, and wears a plumed cocked hat. The back of his throne is decorated with a Trophy of fasces with axes, bonnet rouge, and olive branches. He says: "Oh from the World, O'Connors Friends \ Fox ha!! - how Old are You? \ A Brewer, Lord Mayor, ha!! great Pomp. \ Mr Brief ha!! a great Lawyer can talk well. \ there you may go."
