A Trip to Paris or John Bull and his Spouse Invited to the Honors of the Sitting!!, 15 May 1802
Scope and Contents
By Charles Williams. Bonaparte, seated in a small chair (left), extends his arms to his guests, John Bull and Hibernia, plebeian and bulky, who sit awkwardly, side by side, on a settee which they completely fill. Bonaparte, not caricatured, wears Consular dress; he says: "Indeed Mr Bull I am quite charmed with you - there is something so easy and polite in Your manners." John, a country bumpkin, wears a round hat and top-boots; he sits full face, grinning sideways at his host, his hands on his knees, and says: "Come - come Mounseer Bonney-party that's all gammon d'ye see - D------n me if I know any more about politeness than a Cow does of a new shilling!!" Hibernia (right), a fat termagant with pretensions to gentility, scowls at him, saying, "For shame Mr Bull - what will the Jontleman think of your Blarney about Gammon and Cows, and Bodder, and Nonsense, by St Patrick I must send You to Kilkenny to larn good breeding." She holds a fan, wears feathers in her hair and a low-necked dress with short sleeves; on a locket is an Irish harp. She is John's wife by virtue of the Union, 'Marriage against Inclination...'. Description from the British Museum.
