Two Pair of Candidates Proposed to the Independant Electors of Middlesex, 12 July 1802
Scope and Contents
By Charles Williams. Four men stand on the hustings at Brentford, a wooden platform fronted by a rail; four electors (half length) stand below. On the left are Byng, the rail before him inscribed 'Liberty and Independance', and Burdett. The pair are placarded as 'Enemies to Austerity & Oppression'; both wear hats. Byng says: "I'll never desert my Country nor my Constituents"; he holds in each hand a fragment inscribed '[Bas]tile', from a large 'Plan of the Bastile' on which he and Burdett are standing. Burdett holds up a 'Motion to Suppress Bastiles and all rigorous treatment'; he says: "I'll never desert the Poor nor Parliamentary reform". The two electors standing below applaud, waving their hats. On the right: 'a Humane Good Pair' are Mainwaring, sour-looking and plainly dressed, a hat under his arm, and Aris, a ruffianly jailor clasping two huge keys. Mainwaring, his left hand on his companion's shoulder, says: "My Friend Govr Aris Gentlemen". Aris extends his clenched left fist towards a thin and heavily-shackled man standing on the extreme left, on steps leading to the hustings, who says: "Pray Governor let me have a bit of Straw to lie on". Aris answers: "You shall have a good flogging you Scoundrel". Two men stand below, one about to hurl an egg from a full basket, the other to fling two cats. Description from the British Museum.
