The Man of Taste, [1775 - 1827]
Scope and Contents
Hand-coloured etching. A fat drink-blotched man, wearing a nightcap, sits full face at a round dinner-table, grasping knife and fork, and gloating over the capon in front of him; the table-cloth is tucked under his chin. A footman leans attentively over the back of his chair. At a side-table (left) a buxom and scantily-clad maidservant fills a goblet with effervescing wine. Three others advance from the right carrying dishes: a sucking-pig and raised pie. The table is covered by decanter, bird, cruet, sauce-boat, and accessories. On the floor is a wine-cooler containing six bottles. A dog looks up expectantly. A picture of a trussed bird is inscribed 'Dead Game.' Possibly from 1807. Description from the British Museum.
