A French Ordinary, 2 January 1804
Scope and Contents
Engraving (coloured impression). In the foreground is the kitchen, with an open doorway leading to the dining-room and showing the end of a table and four lean and avid diners whose hats hang on the wall. The cook, carbuncled, filthy, and slobbering, empties the scrapings of a plate into a large pot standing on the floor. A ragged waiter hastens to the dining-room with a plate, scratching his head and looking over his shoulder at the cook. On the wall hangs the ‘game’ for the pot: a frog, a cat, and a dog. A cat sits on the frying-pan. Originally published in 1801. Grego, 'Rowlandson', ii. 44. Partial description from the Catalogue of Political and Personal Satires Vol. VIII. 10346.
