Madame Véry Restaurateur, Palais Royal Paris, 1814
Scope and Contents
Engraving (coloured impression.) A plump, comely woman sits full-face behind a table whose surface forms the base of the design. Her dress is cut low, and her hair piled in a pyramid; her back is reflected in a large wall-mirror. On the table are trays filled with cards, dishes of fruit, a reading lamp, and a plant in a pot. A thin elderly woman, similarly dressed, stands looking at her profile on the right. On the same plate as La Belle Liminaudiere, a companion print. Véry heads the list as the most renowned restaurant in Paris, in a guide book, Le Nouveau Conducteur, of 1818, the address being Palais-Royale, and rue de Rivoli, No. 9. Partial description from the Catalogue of Political and Personal Satires Vol. XI.
