Letter from Madeleine Blaess to her parents about day to day life, 27 April 1940

Item — Box: Blaess Box 2A

Scope and Contents

Blaess talks about scholarships and her thesis. She went to the opera on Saturday with Yolande, she loved the play, it was fantastic, and the music was amazing. On the Sunday she went on a walk because the weather was splendid, instead of working. She visited the Salon d'Automne but found it "so-so". On the Friday she sent went with Mme André to the news. She still hasn't seen Norah nor her sister. The spring looks amazing in Paris with all the flowers, the parks are looking good. She is wearing spring shirts and blouses. Dilys got in a fight with the seamstress and as a result, the latter gave Blaess her green fabric for her dress back. She doesn't understand what she had to do with the fight, and will now have to sew the dress herself. She loves her discussions with the commander - they keep bickering about different subjects, botanic, maths etc. The chambermaid loves the commander and goes out of her way to please him. She keeps entering the Polish men's' room because they leave the door ajar. No alert yet but shots fired and Germans in Paris last Tuesday.
