Letter from Madeleine Blaess to her parents about day to day life, [5] April 1940
Scope and Contents
Blaess has sent her parents some magazines and received flowers in return. She saw Dédé and gave him money, he looks well (better than last time). She went to Orgeval and enjoyed it there. She doesn't enjoy going out and meeting people her age. She keeps thinking about her work and what she could be doing if she wasn't out. She paid a visit to Cohen but he was absent. She developed a code with the captain, Mme André and the polish men at her lodgings - they have a knocking pattern each and can recognise each other. They don't mingle with the rest of the residents of the lodgings as she doesn't like them very much. She's underlining the fact that the chambermaid and Mme André keep telling her room is neat and tidy. Blaess mentions the commander again: he likes her conversation, she's smart. She hates Balzac. The commander likes when she argues with people. The new chambermaid have a crush on the commander. Both Madeleine and the commander are strong headed and opinionated so nobody wants to give up during an argument.
