Letter from Madeleine Blaess to her parents about her holidays and her new Australian friend, [23] March 1940
Scope and Contents
Blaess mentions a weekend off with her Aunt and Yolande in Villeparisis - she thinks this will do her great good because she's really tired and can't help herself but work. She won't bring any books there. She mentions her new Australian friend and they went to a youth meeting together. Blaess doesn't know if she'll go back again, but she likes her company as they both love gardening. She mentions her tea time at Dillis', and also the Celtic lessosn. She is fed up with people trying to look after her and make decisions for her. She says one person tells her off for working, another tells her off for eating, another says what she'll have to wear, what to do, where to go, when to take a break, what to say.... She feels like both her Australian friend and Dillis are acting like big sisters. She critises another friend, Margaret, for her poor writing skills in French, her spelling, her translation skills, and says she is 'hopeless'.
