Scope and Contents

Blaess updates her parents on her life and tells them she will have enough money to live comfortably now. She met an English girl who is taking Celtic lessons with her now - she is thrilled. Both of them and Norah with meet for tea later that week. Blaess admits not being satisfied with her level of Celtic, although her professor is. He thinks she's really good and the translations are great but she doesn't think so. On the other hand, she really likes her German lessons and is taking notes on how her professor is presenting the class so that Blaess can do the same when she is a professor herself. On the subject of her thesis she reveals having turned down invitations to attend conferences (on History, on Hitler etc) to go to the German class. Apparently, Norah went to see Professor Cohen the day before and was crying because she didn't do the work properly. Madeleine is to meet him the next day but already prides herself on having done the work properly, apart from a few notes she took at the very beginning of her thesis and that she had to redo (because she now has, in her terms, 'a greater knowledge'). She also thinks studying Merlin was her destiny, written centuries ago Merlin's friend and confident was called Blaise (and she is called Blaess). Her and Norah have taken the decision to keep their maiden name when they get married, and add their husband's name at the end. Blaess says the conversation at the boarding house are not stimulating and 'conversation doesn't tire the brain', unlike with Norah, whom she can have philosophical conversations with. Norah is thinking about getting married - but she doesn't think this will happen, and thinks of Norah's relationship as 'just a flirt'. Blaess describes the street artists in Paris now that the sun is out. There is one painting she loves in particular but she is waiting to earn money (and have a job) to buy it - she thinks in the future, her house will look heterogeneous but she prefers it to a simple home with a single style. She is happy the captain agrees with her. She also mentions a visit to her grandfather. Her aunt doesn't want her to visit herself - and seems to be restricting her quite a lot. She, as always, end the letter on asking for news from her parents, about their job, health, their dog etc.
