Letter from Madeleine Blaess to her parents relating to her work and friendships, 3 February 1940
Scope and Contents
Blaess asks her parents for advice about bank accounts - she wants to open one but doesn't know which bank to chose from (also, she doesn't want her aunt to know about it). She gives news about Yolande and the rest of the family, as well as her own influence on Yolande's sense of fashion - she thinks she is a great influence as aunt now buys Yolande manicures, and the same gloves and coats. Yolande now has a gramophone. Blaess thinks her German course is really easy but doesn't want to change for a higher level because she wants great groundwork in grammar. She is worried for no apparent reason about her parents and tell them she was quite anxious at the beginning of the week without knowing the reason, so she asks them to reassure her. Blaess reveals she is now half-board/day student at the boarding house, because she spends all of her time in libraries and finds lunches at her lodgings quite long. She also repeats how much she get along with the captain. She says that Norah told her a PhD is supposed to be 3 years, but Blaess insists and wants to do it in 2. She is quite confident she will manage. She tells her parents the captain has been speaking some 'real French' (meaning slang) and she is quite confused but they laugh a lot together and the others at the boarding house are jealous of their friendship. At the end, she reveals the boarding house is going to be fasting for Lent and she is not happy about it.
