Letter from Madeleine Blaess to her parents on her health, weekend plans, and family, 27 January 1940
Scope and Contents
Blaess complains about the lack of letters from her parents - they are always delayed by the post office. She likes her friendship with the other Celtic student (a + 50 year old man) but complains about his age - she seems to only be friends with men that are more than fifty and finds it too old to find a husband in them as she's only 21. She mentions "grand père Louis", translating as "grand father Louis", her grandfather whom she will visit later. Blaess talks about Dédé, and her aunt Violette. He and Blaess's mother have been writing to each other. There has been some money, parcels and letters exchanges. She is disappointed because all her plans are cancelled: Yolande works so no visit to Orgeval, Norah had cancelled last Sunday because she was seeing her boyfriend and now this Sunday is cancelled too because she has the flu. Miss Brigham talked to Madeleine for too long so the latter wasn't able to go out afterwards because it was too late... Blaess thinks next Sunday is the last one she will get to spend in Orgeval. It is so cold the pipes are still frozen, but thankfully she is the only one with running water. She says one can't see the Seine River because there are so many icicles. It has been raining and freezing so walking is dangerous. Blaess has been very sick - stomach ache and fever, so much so that she went to see a doctor and now has a special diet. Madame André and the captain lent her some books and she did the same. Speaking about the captain, he has a higher rank now. They are still very good friend and she tells her parents about a fit of laughter they shared together at diner. Madeleine highlights once again how little she says about herself to anyone - she doesn't reveal anything personal and talk very little.
