Scope and Contents

Blaess updates her parents on the weather and her everyday life. She says it's colder in Paris than in the rest of the country (-12 degrees) and describes how she dresses for the cold weather. As a result, the pipes are frozen, there is no heating, nor water. She updates her parents on the rest of the week: Sunday, Orgeval; Sunday night, aunt sick at the restaurant... She mentions opening a bank account - her aunt apparently didn't want her to. She soon will have her library card for the National Library - her failed attempt at getting an ID photograph made her laugh and she attached them to the letter for her parents because she can't use them for the card. Blaess explains that between the Library and her lodgings she doesn't spend time with young people so she jokes that she will become a spinster. She describes a young girl at her lodgings who's three days younger than her but engaged and soon to be married. Her supervisor, Cohen, and her Celtic professor are really happy with her and her work and she jokes that they gave her so many compliments that she can't take anymore. Strangely, Blaess calls her period "Nicodème" (biblical reference). She recounts having been very sick and that her period arrived early for the third month in a row. Blaess then goes on to talk about books - one of them cost 450 francs. She will buy the books her teacher has recommended and asks for her parents to send her some more. A Carmelite monk spent the night at the lodgings and the girls asked Blaess to knock on his door and give him a chamber pot but she refused, so the man had to manage without. To her, it is pointless to describe the funny and insightful conversations she has with the captain because it would lose its charm. Blaess reveals she hates writing and finds it tedious. She complains about receiving letters because she has to reply but can't keep up with them.
