Letter from Madeleine Blaess to her parents on the changes to Paris due to the war, 1 December 1939
Scope and Contents
Blaess writes that she has been trying to get hold of an English visa but been unsuccessful so far. Blaess also admits being told to return home by one of her professors yet she deems that as long as she works hard it should not interest her teachers what she does with her holidays. Cohen - her thesis advisor- strongly disapproves and almost threatens and demands she stays in Paris. She does contemplate going away anyway but without a visa this would be difficult. She reports than a university in the city has been turned into a military hospital with injured from the front line being tended to there. She mentions about not being happy that she has to study the Breton language as she has been instructed to by a professor who will preside over her thesis viva. Cohen, her thesis advisor, is not happy with her subject and does not want her to work in publishing. He wants her to do literature etc. She does not agree and is not happy but does not say anything. He directs her and makes decisions of her behalf but apart from that, she likes him and thinks he's an honest and intelligent man. She then talks about her aunt and cousin and her aunt not giving her a lot of freedom. She then tells her parents about her new friend, Nina, and talks about how she introduced her to Cohen because she wants to write a thesis as well.
