Letter describing Madeleine Blaess' new accommodation and reuniting with her aunt and cousin, 1 November 1939
Scope and Contents
Description of the view and contents of Blaess' bedroom in her new lodgings. [According to her address and the views she describes, her room is directly across the Luxembourg Gardens - in the students quarter in Paris]. She describes the new company she finds herself amongst, and that she wishes some of her fellow residents were younger. She recounts being exhausted by the new responsibilities of adult life with washing and shopping, as well as the many meetings with professors.
She describes meeting "mémé" (her grandmother) and that she is shocked by her size, as she is much bigger than her mother. She describes meeting her cousin Yolande again and says she is pleased at how healthy and better she looks than previously. She describes Yolande's work at the post office and the fact that she avoids seeing her mother on Sundays - she wants to socialise and have fun. Madeleine mentions her aunt's health - she is physically and mentally exhausted by her work. She takes care of Yolande and Mémé and runs a business. Madeleine feels very tired and complains about some things that happened to her - a button missing, a hole in her bag, and overall fatigue. With regards the war, she mentions hearing the cavalry. She ends her letter with questions to her parents, about their health and whereabouts.
