Dream paintings, [1950s]

 File — Frame: Champernowne Framed
Reference code: 483/7/16

Scope and Contents

These paintings were created by Irene Champernowne and represent her dreams. One painting shows two figures on a globe and a flying saucer; another shows sun coming through clouds; another is of a flower; and two others show a single figure.

Champernowne created them as part of her own art therapy and dream analysis. In particular she discussed these dreams with Toni Wolff, as well as Barbara Hannah and Carl Jung.

Irene felt that the flying saucer dream was ‘prophetic and meaningful’. She describes two figures, who she identified as her and Toni Wolff, on top of a globe, and a silver flying saucer carrying cloaked figures.

In a letter from Irene Champernowne to Toni Wolff, 12 December 1950, she describes ‘an entirely unconscious picture - with a very great white flower with the two women in its heart…as though the flying saucer had come to earth.’

The following letters discuss Irene's dreams, and include sketches that match these paintings: 483/7/4 page 10 of the interview with Gene Namache on Champernowne's flying saucer dream, 19 December 1969. 483/1/14 letter from Irene Champer to Wolff, includes figures on globe and flying saucer picture, 9 November 1950. 483/1/14 letter from Toni Wolff to Irene Champernowne 19 December 1950. 483/1/14 letter from Irene Champernowne to Toni Wolff, includes flower picture, 12 December 1950. 483/1/6 letter from Barbara Hannah to Irene Champernwone 13 September 1957. tbc 483/1/14 letter from Irene Champernowne to Toni Wolff 26 December 1950. 483/1/9/1 letter from Carl Jung to Irene Champernowne 27 June 1957.
