Correspondence with Dorothy Elmhirst, 9 March 1941 - 12 February 1969
Scope and Contents
Correspondence between Dorothy Elmhirst, Dartington Hall, Totnes, Devon and other addresses, to Irene Champernowne. And with some letters also to/from Gilbert Champernowne. Irene and Dorothy were in contact up until Dororthy's death, and the largest amount of Irene's correspondence was with Dorothy. This and the content of the letters reflect the closeness of the relationship. Also contains outgoing/copy letters from Irene to Dorothy. Dorothy also sometimes answered letters from Irene addressed to Leonard Elmhirst. Topics covered include the move to Dartington, Exeter due to bombing in London; Irene and Gilbert seeking support for a clinic and occupational therapy centre in Exeter; descriptions of conditions of mental health wards that patients were kept in before transfer to Withymead; Withymead staff matters; visit(s) to Zurich and Carl Jung lectures; purchase of Cumberland Lodge in 1952; disagreements between Irene and Dorothy c1959/60; Gilbert Champernowne's death; telegram on Carl Jung's death 7 June 1961; Irene's poetry; and copies of two letters between Irene and Dartington Hall after Dorothy's death. Irene appears to have annotated several letters at a later date, e.g. in pencil and red pen, estimating dates of letters and underlining and commenting on certain sentences.
