Scope and Contents

An audio cassette recording of a conversation between Maggie Bird (formerly Mrs. Margaret Waddington and nee Shufflebottom) and Brian Steptoe on 15th June, 1993 at Bramerton, Norfolk. There is a ten page transcript to accompany the recording.

Biographical / Historical

Brian Steptoe is an established publisher, author and photographer with an interest in traditional fairground amusements. He has been involved with publications and publicity about the vintage funfair scene since 1994, and runs Jumper Books. He publishes regular reports for a number of carousel websites and is a contributor to Old Glory magazine. He holds a Fellowship Distinction of the Royal Photographic Society. Brian undertakes photographic work for a number of travelling showmen, including photography for Carters books and has been commissioned to write, design, undertake photography and supply images for museums, showmen, books and calendars. He is also the official photographer for the UK Society of Independent Roundabout Proprietors and he has extended his contacts with both independent and Guild showmen to produce Jump On, Jump On, which was published in October 1994.

In 1995 Brian became a member of the US National Carousel Association. He produces regular illustrated reports on UK galloper events and personalities for the online Carousel site.
